SUMMARY:Topic Talks - Syd to Hobart Sendoff with special guest Tony Mowbray
DESCRIPTION:Stay on after WAGS for a special evening at RQYS.   \nTo mark the occasion of Sydney-Hobart 2025\, we invite you to join the Commodore at this special “send-off” event at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on 3 December 2025 from 6pm in the Member’s Lounge. \nWe welcome special guest speaker and solo world sailor and adventurer Tony Mowbray for an amazing presentation on “The Power of Commitment”. \nIn his own excerpt from his latest book “Never Give In”\, Tony says: \nI would like to take you on a journey.  It’s going to be a journey across many oceans\, over a lot of water but very much a journey of human spirit.  This is not a sailing story\, it’s much more than that. \nMy seven crew and I participated in the fatal 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race in which 6 men tragically died\, 55 were rescued and a number of boats sank. On our boat\, for 15 hours\, we thought that we had found out how we were going to die.  By a slim margin\, we managed to survive that incredible cornerstone event in each of our lives. \n1 year and 10 months later\, my yacht Solo Globe Challenger\, had been rebuilt and in October 2000 I headed back to sea in an attempt to sail solo\, non-stop and unassisted around the world. \nOver the years\, I’ve had more than my fair share of harrowing near death situations. \nI’ve learnt a lot about myself and what makes me tick. \nWe look forward to farewelling several of the boats and crew representing Queensland at this year’s Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race\, including six boats from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.  Join us in wishing them well and enjoy dinner in the Member’s Lounge during the presentation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Boating Industry Association Marine Jobs Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Boating Industry Association (BIA) is proud to be hosting its first RQYS presentation during the Get Onboard Boat Expo – Summer Edition to discuss all things “Marine Jobs”. \nIn this panel presentation\, you’ll hear the stories of how four successful Australians have turned their love of boating into a career.   They will share their journeys from start until now\, discuss any qualifications they obtained along the way and why and delve into a typical day in their role. \nPeople often forget about the hundreds of roles available in the marine industry\, and BIA is here to show you how you can avoid a desk job and spend your days by the water.  Hosted by BIA CEO Andrew Fielding\, you’ll meet: \n  \nBrett Bolton – Director Manly Marine Services and Freedom Boat Club \nKaren Baldwin – CEO of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron \nSteph Mannering – BIA Apprentice of the Year at Cruise Craft \nLee Randall – Sailmaker\, Consultant and Podcaster at Bulwarks and Bulldust \nGlen Scott – Marina Manager at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron \n  \nAll our guests have chosen careers in the Marine industry and followed their love of water and boating to spend their lives by the ocean.  Join us at this free presentation in the RQYS Auditorium and be inspired to use your skills in this exciting and growing industry. \n

She was proud to have competed in her 3rd Sydney to Hobart yacht race last year. She divides her time between offshore or racing dinghies most weekends.Melanie has never been far from boats in general\, spending most of her life working in and around the industry; ships chandleries\, sailing schools\, a maritime college and now with Australian Sailing\, as the Safety\, Rules and Ratings Officer.
