Not to be outdone, Brendan Casey continued his remarkable year of Finn success before jumping into an ILCA 7 and claiming second place at the ILCA Masters World Championship. Our Masters sailors have also enjoyed considerable success on the international stage. Kerry Waraker claimed gold in the ILCA 6 Super Legends, while Christine Bridge competed in the Grand Masters and Stephen Girdis and Michael Pitt competed in the Great Grand Masters category in Greece. Another RQYS sailor making her mark on the international stage is Niamh Meehan, who is campaigning in the Olympic Nacra 17 class alongside Jake Liddell. The pair have been competing as part of the Australian Sailing Squad on the international circuit, gaining valuable experience against the world’s best Nacra 17 teams as they build towards LA28. Their 2026 campaign has included major European events and the Nacra 17 World Championship in Quiberon, France, where they finished 19th overall in a highly competitive international fleet. A further exciting example of the depth of youth talent within RQYS is found in sisters Caterina and Anneke Meyer, who continue to develop their international sailing careers in the Snipe class. The pair represented RQYS and Australia at the Snipe Junior World Championship in Spain, competing against 53 teams from around the world. They finished 38th overall, while also achieving an impressive third place among the all-female teams at the championship. Volunteers: our greatest strength None of the Squadron’s achievements would be at all possible without the incredible commitment and dedication of our truly invaluable Volunteers. Led by Phil Tooth, this remarkable team is a major reason the Squadron can confidently host world-class events and deliver an outstanding sailing program throughout the year. Race Officers, mark layers, rescue boat crews, starters, finish boat teams, protest committees, judges, jurors and countless others contribute thousands of hours each year. These tremendous Volunteers ensure our racing and events are delivered safely, professionally and to the highest possible standard. Their contribution extends well beyond race days, too. From early morning preparations and equipment set-up through to the final boat coming ashore, our Volunteers are there to make sure everything runs smoothly. It is their dedication, knowledge and passion for sailing that allows everyone — from first-time Green Fleet participants to national and international champions — to enjoy the best sailing experience. To Phil and the entire Volunteer team, thank you. Your contribution is invaluable to the Squadron, and we are truly grateful for everything you do. Looking forward As we commence our 142nd Sailing Season, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron remains committed to growing participation, delivering outstanding events and providing pathways for sailors of every age and ability. Here’s to fair winds, close racing and another memorable season on the waters of Moreton Bay.
