RQYS MAINSHEET 2026

At the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, volunteering is more than lending a hand. It is about becoming part of a passionate, skilled and welcoming community united by a love of sailing, teamwork and the Club. From local club racing and weekend regattas to national championships and events on the world stage, RQYS continues to set the standard for professionalism, safety and competitor experience. At the heart of that success is our Volunteer team of over 150 Members and Non-Members. Across the season, Volunteers supported every aspect of our operations — on and off the water, in race management, safety, logistics, hospitality, administration and event support. Their dedication and teamwork helped ensure events were safe, fair, welcoming and run to a world-class standard. Thank you to all contributors! You don’t need to be an experienced sailor to volunteer. Training is provided, and new Volunteers are paired with experienced Members, making it easy to learn, contribute and become part of the team. Our Volunteers come from all walks of life, bringing different skills, perspectives and experiences to every event. What they share is a willingness to pitch in and a belief in the future of RQYS Sailing. You’re welcome to join our team! For those who love being out on the water, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved: Safety Boat Crew Supporting sailors, coaches and race management. Mark Layers Placing and adjusting course marks. Start & Finish Boat Teams Managing starts, finishes, timing and communication. Race Officers & Assistants Help oversee race operations and fair competition. Support Boat Drivers Providing logistics, coaching and event support. Prefer to stay ashore? These roles are just as important: Ramp & Launch Support Helping sailors launch and retrieve boats. Registration & Sign On Welcoming competitors and managing check-ins. Results & Scoring Support Assisting with race data and results. Event Logistics & Hospitality Supporting briefings, events, presentations and visitors. Officer of the Day Welcoming and orientating visitors to the Club. Our valuable Volunteers are just gold! The people behind our sailing successes are the unsung heroes and backbone of our Squadron’s operations. A record-breaking 141st Sailing Season has showcased RQYS at its very best, and behind every successful race, regatta and championship is an incredible team of people — afloat and on shore — who make it all happen, safely, seamlessly and efficiently, as Phil Tooth reports.
