RQYS MAINSHEET 2026

After several years of significant capital projects, this year has allowed the Board to focus on business as usual: strengthening governance, delivering our Strategic Plan, and progressing the Squadron’s long-term Master Planning initiative while maintaining a sound financial position. It has been a privilege to serve my first year as Board Chair during the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron’s 141st Sailing Season. Having helped instigate its formation in my time as Chair of the General Committee, it is rewarding to see the Board settle into a productive rhythm. Working closely with the Flag Officers, CEO Karen Baldwin, management and staff allows us to deliver high- quality services to Members while maintaining strong governance and sound financial oversight. The breadth of knowledge and experience around the Board table continues to be one of the Squadron’s greatest strengths, with constructive discussion and collaboration ensuring balanced decision-making in the best interests of our Club. Two significant investments have shaped this year’s budget. The first is the implementation of the Northstar software system, which is expected to be operational later this year and will improve the efficiency of our operations and member services. The second is the continued development of the Squadron’s Master Plan, a vital project that will guide the future design and development of our facilities and assets for generations to come. The execution of our Strategic Plan also continues to make steady progress. Built around four key pillars —  encouraging participation in sailing and on-water events  enhancing the member experience  improving infrastructure  and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Club — the plan underpins every aspect of the Squadron’s operations. To support its delivery, our CEO has established Key Performance Indicators across committees and staff, enabling regular monitoring and reporting to the Board to ensure consistent progress. Operationally, the Squadron continues to perform well. The marina and boatyard remain busy, while our new caretakers at Canaipa have made an excellent start and are receiving positive feedback from Members. Hospitality continues to be our greatest operational challenge this year. Although the quality of our café, bar and restaurant has improved significantly since these services returned to in-house management, achieving the financial performance of the previously-outsourced model remains a priority. Beyond our operations, the Squadron continues to play an important role within the wider community. Positive feedback from Members, visiting sailors and guests reflects the welcoming environment that has become a hallmark of the Club. It is particularly encouraging to see so many young people learning to sail through the Squadron, reinforcing our commitment to fostering the next generation of sailors and ensuring a vibrant future for our sport. Fellow Members, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is in a strong position, with exciting opportunities ahead. Thank you to our Members and staff for your ongoing support and for the privilege of serving as your Chairman.
