2026 another ‘jewel in the crown’ … Vibrant Squadron “community spirit” a notable highlight across all areas of our Club’s operations and activities. “It has been both an honour and a privilege to serve the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, and reflecting on the past twelve months leaves me with an overwhelming sense of pride in what we have achieved together,” writes Commodore Curtis Skinner at the end of his first year in the role. As we commence the 142nd Sailing Season, I would like to thank all Members for the confidence and support you have shown me throughout my first full year as Commodore. Our Squadron continues to demonstrate why it is regarded as one of Australia’s premier yacht clubs. On the water, we have enjoyed another outstanding year of sailing, highlighted by the success of the inaugural Brisbane to Bundaberg Yacht Race, Brisbane Race Week, the Australian/ Worlds Finn Championships, WAGS, and numerous state, national and Squadron championships during 2025–26. Our sailing program has showcased the very best of RQYS. Equally impressive has been the competitive performance of our Members. Throughout the year, our sailors have represented both the Squadron and Australia with distinction across national and international competitions. From our youngest sailors taking their first steps into competitive racing through to World-class champions and Olympic campaigners, the depth of talent within our membership ranks continues to inspire us all — especially supported by our John Harrison and Wyuna Foundations. While our success on the water is highly visible, it is the work behind the scenes that allows the Squadron to continue moving forward. During the past year we have continued to invest in our facilities, improve the Member experience and strengthen the governance and long-term financial sustainability of the Club. These achievements are possible only through the dedication of our Volunteers, Board, Flag Officers, Committees, CEO Karen Baldwin and the entire RQYS team, who work tirelessly to deliver an exceptional experience for our Members and visitors alike. “One of the most rewarding aspects of my first year’s experience as Commodore has been witnessing the incredible spirit of our Squadron community.” Whether volunteering at regattas, mentoring junior sailors, enjoying time at Canaipa, supporting social functions or simply lending a hand whenever needed, our Members continue to demonstrate that RQYS is far more than a marina or sailing club. It is a vibrant community built on a shared passion for boating. The social functions including the Commodore’s [Masquerade] Ball have been quite the spectacle! As we look ahead, our focus remains on ensuring the Squadron continues to evolve while respecting the traditions that have made RQYS what it is today. We will continue investing in our facilities, supporting sailing at every level, enhancing Member services and embracing opportunities that strengthen the long-term future of our Club. A significant milestone for us this year is fully resuming the management of our Club’s Hospitality services and success of the food and beverage for our Members. We have invested in the sector and are seeing fantastic results; now, we are in a consolidation process to ensure the finances meet Member expectations. Finally, I would like to thank every Member for the role you play in making our Squadron such a special place — all of your contributions, individually and collectively, to the culture and success of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron are simply outstanding. I look forward to seeing you around the Club, on the water and at the many events that will make the 2026–27 season another memorable chapter in the proud history of our Squadron.
