Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Powerboat Navigation is about far more than simply finding the way. It combines seamanship, preparation, precision and decision-making, while providing Members with opportunities to develop their skills, compete with fellow boaties, and enjoy the camaraderie that is such an important part of Squadron life. 1 • Goodwill Cup The 141st Season delivered plenty of highlights, beginning with the Goodwill Cup in November 2025. A fleet of 36 boats competed, including an impressive number (20) of RQYS crews. Our Squadron produced an outstanding performance, winning both the GPS and Traditional Divisions and securing the Overall Club Championship with 44 points, ahead of Southport Yacht Club on 71 points. In the GPS Division, Commodore Curtis Skinner aboard Black Betty led from the front, recording an exceptional score of just three points. The Traditional Division came down to the wire, with Craig Black on Odyssey edging out Olive J on countback after both finished on 28 points, with just one-tenth of one second separating them! The Goodwill Cup holds a special place in the Squadron’s history. RQYS’s longest- running Club regatta began in 1933 and has been contested as an interclub event against Southport Yacht Club since 1962. While the rivalry is fiercely contested on the water, the event is equally valued for the clubs’ friendship and camaraderie. 2 • Myora Cup The Myora Cup Navigation event was held on 7–8 March under overcast skies in 15kn southeasterlies, with 22 vessels: 12 in the Traditional Division and 10 in GPS. Both courses were 13.13nm, with eight and 30 checkpoint gates, respectively. Starting in the Rainbow Channel, the fleet headed south past Dunwich to Blaksley’s before finishing as vessels approached the Eric Early Light. Competitors then continued to Canaipa for Commodore’s drinks and a Longhouse dinner for 80, hosted by the Cruising and Navigation Committee. GPS Division results: 1 Geoff O’Connor, Knot Home (2 points) 2 R/Cdre Chris Land, Aquamac (7) 3 Cdre Curtis Skinner, Black Betty (15) 4 Trent Rowell, Lucinda Bay (25) 5 V/Cdre Todd Anderson, Illusion (49) Traditional Division results: 1 Craig Black, Odyssey (26 points) 2 Charles Kirby, Nocturn (49) 3 Stephen O’Brien, September Song (52) 4 P/Cdre Richard Crooke, Wybalena (125) 5 Craig Sharp, Rush (128) Navigating tradition Precision, strategy and a little friendly rivalry all came together across Moreton Bay in another outstanding, trans-Seasons program of RQYS Powerboat Navigation!
