A significant amount of planning and preparation will be required ahead of the campaign — together with timely Member and wider marine community communications — and this will be an important focus for the Marina Team over the coming year. Neighbourhood maintenance Aesthetic works continue, with water-blasting cleaning of the pontoon decks being much appreciated by tenants and visitors. In structural terms, we are planning some minor repairs to some of the steel piles in Marina 2 towards the end of 2026. The Bay Lookout has recently completed a complete internal renovation, including new flooring, partitions, a new paint scheme, toilets, tiles, and cabinetry. Other projects we are working on include the: Marina Vertical Wall; Clubhouse Reception, Miller Gallery and Girdis Room; … and ‘Palm Valley’ is scheduled to be resurfaced with additional car parking for Members. ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ in action I would like to make special mention of the RQYS Liveaboards, who play an important role in ‘keeping a weather eye lifting’ around the Marina and Squadron grounds. They assist both Assistant Marina Manager Dave Fisher and myself with alerting our team to many different items, such as marina lights out, leaking taps, flapping halyards and much more besides. One recent issue is a more serious example of our Squadron’s own ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ in action: mindful Member Matt Tesch noticed a vessel settling lower in the water one evening and alerted us by phone. Matt and neighbour Kit Parlane didn’t stop there, swiftly collecting the portable bilge pumps stationed at the Marina 2 bridge and the head of L/M row, deploying the first into the vessel’s bilges, the second aboard on stand-by. Without their above-and-beyond interventions, taking turns to monitor progress overnight, the vessel would not have remained afloat. Their quick-response efforts averted disaster, embodying the best traditions of our Squadron, and boaties more generally, and I want to make special mention of these two Members and thank them publicly. If you see any issues around the RQYS marinas or Squadron Precinct, please make the Marina Team aware so that we can resolve them. Master Plan and future capital projects The RQYS Master Plan is reaching an exciting point, as we move from discussion to planning of major capital projects. This is an important milestone for the Squadron and provides an opportunity to strategically invest in our facilities and ensure RQYS is well-positioned for the future. The marina will play an important role within this broader Master Plan, with future projects focused on improving safety and functionality, presentation and the overall experience for our Members. Marina Team The success of the marina is built around the people who work in it every day, and I recognise and sincerely thank Dave Fisher, Sue Guilbert, Belinda Annan, Kate Morton, Tracie Porter, Graham Rock, Shane Green, Tony Denhoed and Gary Haggett for their dedication, professionalism and commitment during the year. These powerful, solar-charged Lithium-ion battery-powered portable bilge pump trolleys can be quickly wheeled out to any vessel at risk of taking on water around the marina and are simple to switch into action but be aware — it’s a two-person job to safely heft one over the railings for onboard deployment!
