For many participants, sailing is much more than a day on the water. It is an opportunity to be challenged, included, and empowered. Through teamwork, communication, and hands-on learning, participants develop skills that extend far beyond sailing, gaining confidence in themselves and their ability to take on new challenges. Whether taking the helm for the first time, working as part of a crew, or simply stepping outside their comfort zone, each experience helps build new pathways for personal growth and achievement. As MWF Brisbane continues in its third year of operations, demand for our programs remains high. This success has been made possible through the dedication of our Volunteer community, with 33 Volunteers contributing their time, skills, and experience to program delivery. Whether serving as skippers, crew, mentors, or shoreside support, Volunteers play a critical role in ensuring every participant feels welcomed, valued, and capable of success. Many participants arrive with little or no experience on the water, yet leave having contributed as valued members of a crew. Through these shared experiences, barriers are reduced, confidence grows, and lasting pathways are created between participants, Volunteers, schools, families, and the broader sailing community. One of MWF Brisbane’s greatest achievements has been the establishment of a strong and sustainable community around the Foundation’s programs. As participant numbers have continued to grow, so too has the Volunteer team, creating more opportunities for young people to experience sailing, develop confidence, and build meaningful connections. This culture of teamwork and growth was reflected during Brisbane Race Week in May, where Team MWF The Tribe secured its first-ever race win! Despite competing as a Volunteer crew that does not regularly train and sail together like many established racing teams, the crew demonstrated exceptional commitment, teamwork, and resilience throughout the regatta. Their success highlighted the strength of the MWF Brisbane program and the opportunities that emerge when people are encouraged to learn, develop, and work towards a common goal. Together with the Squadron, participating schools, community organisations, Volunteers, families, and supporters, MWF Brisbane continues to create opportunities for people of all abilities to belong, participate and thrive. Every voyage represents another pathway to possibility, helping people discover confidence, connection — and what they are capable of achieving. n For more info on Making Waves Foundation and our exciting plans for 2027, contact Natalie Herity, Regional Manager, South East Queensland, at nherity@makingwaves.au Together, we can make waves that truly matter! n Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Yearbook Mainsheet 2026 39 Making Waves Foundation • Reflections
