RQYS MAINSHEET 2026

Fielding fickle winds … A fantastic inaugural offshore RQYS regatta, despite a frustrating start! Set to become a signature offshore race on the Squadron sailing calendar, the inaugural turned into an unforgettable adventure for competitors, volunteers, sponsors and supporters. Members, sponsors and special guests gathered aboard boats to farewell the fleet as they headed north. The weather was picture perfect for whale watching … just not quite what you would order for an offshore yacht race! While many crews had expected a quick trip to Bundaberg, Mother Nature had other ideas. Light winds turned the race into a true test of patience, strategy and endurance, with boats chasing every breath of breeze. At times yachts were making less than a knot of progress, and in some areas the current was so strong they were actually travelling backwards. Despite the slow start on the Bay and the prevailing conditions, however, there would be no shortage of memorable moments!  “For my first regatta I could not have asked for a better introduction,” says new Business Development & Sponsorship Manager Kristina Gowlland. “It truly was special, showcasing everything great about offshore sailing: the camaraderie, resilience, humour and adventure.” Above: CEO Karen Baldwin, standing next to one of the sponsors’ unofficial mascots for the race, was joined by Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Cr Helen Blackburn for the pre-race briefing at RQYS.
